Activity summary

The aim of this project is to study microplastics (MPls) and nanoplastics (NPls) in the urban water cycle.

The aim is to analyse their sources, their environmental behaviour and their impact on human health and urban ecosystems in order to propose control strategies.
The aim is to assess the risks to human health (e.g. cardiovascular and endocrine diseases) and urban aquatic ecosystems, while proposing scientific solutions to establish environmental standards.
We also take into account interactions with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and plastic additives.

We are working on sustainable management scenarios incorporating innovative solutions, such as source reduction and wastewater treatment. Methodologies include database-based causality analyses, simulations and surveys of stakeholder practices.

The expected results are to strengthen international standards (ISO/CEN), raise awareness among public decision-makers and support ecological transition strategies. This transdisciplinary project is an opportunity to influence local and international water and plastic waste management policies.
