Activity summary

Malnutrition and infectious diseases form a vicious circle and represent a double threat for children in low- and middle-income countries. Small-quantity lipid-based nutritional supplements (SQ-LNS) are a category of ready-to-use, nutrient-rich and fortified food supplements designed to prevent malnutrition and improve child survival, growth and development. Supplementing children aged between 6 and 23 months with SQ-LNS in food-insecure areas with low vaccination coverage is also a promising way of encouraging vaccination and other health services.

The NutriVax-Measles research project, entitled Increasing measles vaccination coverage through supplementation with SQ-LNS incentive in children aged 6-23 months, is a pragmatic randomised parallel cluster controlled trial conducted in Yobe State, northern Nigeria.
The main objective is to estimate the effectiveness of a mass SQ-LNS supplementation programme added to the routine vaccination programme compared with the routine vaccination programme alone in terms of measles vaccination coverage, after 12 months of implementation of the programme, in children aged 12 to 23 months as part of the end-of-study cross-sectional household survey.
